Best place for new multi-level car park

Orange City Council wants to hear where local residents believe is the best location to build a new multi-level car park.
In its long-term planning the Council has allocated $4.5 million in the 2022/23 financial year to build a new multi-level car park, as part of the FutureCity CBD upgrade program.
Orange Mayor Reg Kidd believes now is the time to start a conversation about where it should be built.
Have your say

Of the areas presented, obviously the first two (Woolies Car Park and Ophir Car Park) are the only two which would be viable options for the main shopping areas. However, I notice that the most logical and most needed car park has been ignored and that is behind the Hospital which should have been done at the time of building the Hospital.
Ophir car Park is perfect with a walkway across kite St. There are service nsw,RIC and centreline in close proximity where people can park to visit these offices as well as access the shopping centre and summer st easily. Would be the best and least disruptive.
It is great to see Orange Council forward thinking on various options. However a plan showing each location would have been helpful to assist visually.
The Future Orange study undertaken by SJB already considers a number of these locations. I consider the Woolworths car park site has the greatest potential to transform that site, contribute to the CBD through new development that better utilises the existing at-grade car park and allows for additional parking in an area that is already used for that purpose and has good accessibility.
Section "10.5 Anson Streets / Woolworths Car Park" in SJB's "Special Projects" chapter has some good ideas for various options for the Woolworths car park site.
I know this isn’t on topic and goes against future city plans but-
• 2 multi level carparks
- provides more parking
- allows most roads to reduce their parking and make each street 4 lanes (2 lanes each way in total) with a raised platform going across all 4 to create a pedestrian crossing and to slow down traffic, which kind of makes the CBD more walkable as their is more crossings and cars slowing down.
2 multilevel carparks are needed at woolies as it’s just a big eyesore and can maybe allow businesses to open in a prime location
the other one can be at the ophir or council carpark as they are both big areas and can provide parking for events. ophir carpark can provide parking for ANZAC day or even if a big event comes to Wade Park. Ophir can provide Robertson park and council events but will be an eyesore for that area
I think this is a wonderful idea and a multi level car park close to the CBD would be great. If two could be built it would be better as the population of Orange is growing rapidly and parking has become a nightmare. Yesterday the lineup to get into the Woolies car park was so long that we decided not to shop as we knew we wouldn’t find a parking space.
Do not make it paid parking as people won’t use it. I don’t know of any shopping centre parking in Australia where people have to pay. This would put a very poor light on the people of Orange.
Costs may be minimised by additional retail outlets or residential units which I think are both good ideas. The idea of free parking for the first 3 hours may be the way to go.
Woolies or the Ophir are the best spots. Orange would certainly benefit by increased retail shopping if parking was easier.
Let’s make this a priority and start on it straight away rather than waiting. We need parking now.
Orange is long overdue for a multi-level carpark. If we are to really ‘future proof’ we need 2 multi-storey parking structures.
The main one at either the Ophir site or Woolies for CBD shoppers. I agree with the option of having paid parking but only if it is free for the first 1-2 hours at least (preferably 0-3 hours free). The Woolies site will cause greater immediate disruption during the build but allows for a far larger complex; whereas the Ophir site would be less disruptive during construction but it’s limited in size.
The second parking structure we need asap should go on the old Williams site in Peisley St. With the new Conservatorium, Museum, Art Gallery, Library, and Civic Theatre, the extra parking is essential. Plus it will be equally useful for parking during Farmer’s Markets and the like.
Let’s get both done now.
We’ve been needing a multi-storey carpark for years now and Orange’s population is only getting higher! Woolworths Carpark is and eyesore & needs a upgrade, this site is critical for a multi-storey carpark & should be looked at straight away. The last two times I’ve come down the street into the Woolworths or big W carparks, I’ve driven around for a good 10 minutes unable to find a vacant spot! I don’t understand why council didn’t get onto this issue a hell lot sooner because it’s only going to take years to build & not to mention THEY WANT TO BUILD IT IN THE THIRD YEAR?? This project should be a top priority in the future city project, get your priorities right council!!
The Ophir would be best because it would be used more by those who work in the city leaving more spaces for shoppers in CBD. A sky bridge to shopping centre would be very useful. There are a number of Doctors surgeries and similar in the area too which would be handy. Like the idea of retail and residential being included.
Woolies car park is the best place ,while it would be inconvenient while construction was happening it's close to the centre of town and as an oldie I do not want to have to walk blocks from the shops with my shopping ,alternately Sale street near PHP. Would be an excellent alternative it Tobi's close to most things
A multi Level far park near Harris farm Woolworths would he the perfect place and while it would be disruptive while being constructed it would be the most convenient close to the centre of town ,as an oldie I don't want to walk blocks from where I shop so near PHP would be equally convenient ,let's just get it done not just talk about it for years
A multi-level carpark would be great, but it would have to be in the centre of town. There's no point making it miles from the shops or it will be underutilised. Also happy with paid parking as long as you can park for free for a short amount of time - for example, free for the first hour or three hours free. A modern carpark would also be appreciated, where your numberplate is scanned upon entry so no tickets are necessary, or even one where parking can be purchased/extended via an app.
*Please don't be greedy with the price of parking. It will scare people away if it's to high. Keep it low to encourage use and to recoup money back slowly.
*Please allow room for bigger vehicles.
* Lets be smart with this build. Don't waste money please.
* Bang for our buck. Get as much as we can, without compromising the structure.
Perhaps it is more carparking in several locations that is required? I know that cbd workers are parking in the library carpark and choking it for the more short term users. Seems to me cbd parkers could be further away and walk the one or two blocks, in which case the kite and lords place car park could be enlarged.
On the other hand, shoppers are going to be focused around the Woolies area and need it more there.
Pedestrian ambiance and access is a high priority for me.
Nowhere. More cars in the CBD should be discouraged and the funds should be put towards a sustainable shuttle bus service.
Only sites 1and 2 are suitable for elderly residents, the other sites mentioned are too far away
With Orange's weather extremes and for the fair and equitable access for all (including disabled and elderly) a Sky Bridge from either the proposed 'Ophir' or 'Woollies' sites is critical. These are the only two options close enough to the central shopping zone that make sense. I believe a multi-story carpark in any other location will never be fully utilised by shoppers.
I believe you should do it right first time and build two.
One at the Ophir car park site with the sky bridge, and one in the civic precinct, either of the choices in that area would be fine.
Orange is only going to grow and grow, just get on and provide for this now so we can grow without hindrances
Civic centre ideal location. Worst possible place woollies current car park. Plan for the future not just for today. Thank you.
