New floodplain plans suggests solutions
The new draft Floodplain Risk Management Plan suggests a range of potential solutions, aimed at preventing or minimising flood damage in neighbourhoods around Orange.
The list of solutions includes:
- Changes to the Development Control Plan (DCP)
- Flood mitigation measures
DCP changes
The plan proposes changes to the wording of the DCP which would put limits on the buildings in flood-prone areas of Orange.
The plan suggests ‘a graded set of planning controls for future development that recognise the location of the development within the floodplain’. These would be managed through ‘an update of the wording in Orange DCP 2004’.
The recommended wording for inclusion in Orange DCP 2004 is set out in Appendix C (Pages C.1 to C .16) of Volume 1 of the report.
The plans states that ‘adoption of the recommended updates will ensure that future development in flood liable areas at Orange is compatible with the flood risk’.
The maps in the plan show the location of flood-prone areas and which DCP measure could apply in each zone.
Mitigation measures
The plan’s suggested list of mitigation measures in locations around Orange, would cost around $12.6 million.
It includes ‘detention basins (earth-works designed to slow down the movement of floodwater downstream) and widening storm water channels.

Consultation has concluded
