Council asks community for suggestions on Newman Park memorial

Orange City Council is asking for community suggestions to help draft plans to preserve a unique World War 1 memorial in Newman Park.

Orange City Council has received a $10,000 grant from the NSW Government’s Community War Memorials Fund to produce a heritage landscape plan.

A major feature of Newman Park is an avenue of elm trees which were planted in 1919 as a memorial to students from the nearby East Orange Public School who died during WW1. There is also a low-set, bluestone memorial which includes a plaque.

Orange Mayor Jason Hamling said the memorial was an important part of Orange’s history.

“The avenue of trees in Newman Park is now more than 100 years old and it’s important that we make sure we look after it and plan for the future,” Cr Jason Hamling said.

“As well as the memorial, Newman Park has a neighbourhood playground and is a popular picnic spot for families.

“By talking with the community and by conducting an online survey, we’re hoping to find out how people are using the park and how they want to see it preserved and developed.”

Orange City Council has appointed specialist consultants to produce a landscape plan. The plan will include an expert assessment of the avenue of trees and how to improve the park to enhance community use of the park.

Two face-to-face consultation sessions will be held. One session for residents of the neighbouring UPA retirement village will be held on Friday 24 March. An open community session will also be held on Wednesday 22 March from 10.30am in the West Room of the Orange Regional Gallery, before a site visit to Newman Park. People attending the session are asked to RSVP to 6393 8170 by 16 March 2023.

The community can also have their say by completing a short online survey.

  • More than 100 years after it was planted, the Memorial Avenue of Trees and the nearby monument would benefit from heritage conservation planning.

Orange City Council is interested to hear from the community as a new Cultural Heritage Landscape plan is developed to enhance the appearance and function of the memorial.

The results of this survey will inform the work of specialist consultants as the new landscape plan is  developed.
