Consultation has concluded

Council is asking the community for feedback on the future of the Cook Park Aviary.

We want to understand how people feel about the aviary, what it means to the community, and what you think should happen next.

As part of this process, an independent check of the aviary will also be carried out to look at animal welfare, the condition of the structure and what it takes to run it.

Your feedback, along with the findings of the review, will be included in a report to Council to help guide the final decision. Please submit your feedback by Sunday 26 July 2026.

    Hi Birdman, 

    Thanks for sharing your question. If Council determines to remove the aviary the birds will need to be rehomed to other establishments or private individuals willing to care for the birds. This process may take months if not years to enact.

    Hi Kaicken, 

    Thanks for your question. Any plans for where the aviary might be relocated, and what could happen to the current site, would be matters for Council to consider in the future.

    One possibility noted in the 2021 Conservation Management Plan is that relocating the aviary could allow part of Cook Park's original Victorian-era path layout to be restored. Cook Park was designed with paths arranged in the pattern of a Union Jack, and the aviary currently sits across part of the western section of that layout.

    That said, no decision has yet been made.
